At our Nov. meeting we discussed Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. Focussing
on one June day in 1923 as Clarissa Dalloway plans a party, this has been
described as ‘a novel without a plot’. A secondary story is that of
shell-shock victim Septimus Warren Smith who commits suicide on the same
day, the two themes being brought together as the party unfolds at the end
of the day. We all agreed with the comment of the writer Michael Cunningham
who said the book contained “…some of the most beautiful, complex, incisive
and idiosyncratic sentences ever written in English”. We went on to discuss
Woolf’s life and death and her impact on English literature, in particular,
perhaps to our surprise, how she had influenced so much of our own Group
reading. Thank-you Bernard for your hospitality. Chris |
