Nine of us met up to watch The Gift of Music, an intimate portrait of
Leonard Bernstein, 1918-1990, composer, pianist and conductor. Through his
work with the New York Philharmonic he championed modern American classical
music and introduced new and unfamiliar works to the repertoire, so that
music by composers such as Mahler, Gershwin and Copeland is now
well-recognised and appreciated. On the Waterfront, Candide, On the Town,
and, of course, West Side Story are among his non-classical compositions.
But the main thing that came across was that he seemed to have a truly
wonderful personality. It’s impossible in a few short sentences to do
justice to such a remarkable man. Suffice it to say we had a very uplifting
and enjoyable morning. Our thanks to Syd. Chris |
