14 of us set out from the little car park at Bedburn just outside
Hamsterley Forest on what turned out to be a misty, moisty, though very
colourful morning Some fairly muddy paths took us into the forest proper
where the tracks improved considerably. Our path took us past the Green Man
wooden sculptures, through both deciduous and evergreen plantings and
climbed gently to a ‘banana break’ stop at Metcalf’s House, a ruined
building which was once a coaching inn, The views from the path across the
valley to the south and to the slopes beyond provided an artist’s palate of
wonderful autumn colour. The changing colours of the larches was
particularly striking. After our refreshment stop the descent to the stream
was followed by a fairly strenuous although thankfully short climb to the
top of the hill where the views over the moors to the north were tremendous.
A further descent took us to the road where we returned via the ‘wheelchair
walk’ to the car park. As we returned, the sun suddenly appeared from behind
the clouds revealing the true colourful glory of the trees. The strong winds
and rain of recent days had caused considerable leaf loss which detracted a
little from the overall effect but there was still sufficient colour to make
the walk a most enjoyable experience. A very welcome snack lunch at the
Wearside Diner was our reward after the walk. Many thanks to Pat and Barry
for their considerable effort in ‘recce-ing’ the area and finding a walk we
could all enjoy. Roger
